Vinyl Banners – Welded or Stitched?


Which is better, a welded hem or a stitched hem? Both add strength to the edges of vinyl banners, but the final answer depends on your needs.



GOOD. Double stitching the hems is a solid choice, however stitching creates perforations/small holes in the vinyl and some say banners with stitched hems are more prone to fail along the edges in stronger winds. There’s also the thread stitches running through the artwork that some object to.

BETTER. For welded edges, the two surfaces of the hem are heated to over 325° centigrade, melting the vinyl. It’s then drawn through pressure rollers to complete the fusion process. With a welded hem, there are no stitches. The material remains intact and is strengthened by the double layer on all edges. In our opinion, welded banner hems offer more strength against wind damage, plus a cleaner look.



BEST. Welded Edges with Webbing. If grommets rip out of a banner hem, it’s usually due to high winds. This can be prevented by adding nylon webbing INSIDE the perimeter welded hem providing triple strength protection against damage.
